Collective--in what sense of the word?

Hi all,

I couldn't help but notice the lovely description Heather inscribed at the top of this blog--and love it. We are a collective of people who have a lot of the same goals and aspirations, while still retaining some of the strongest individual personalities I've ever interacted with.

What do we mean by "collective," though? I know there was some chatter when the idea of the Dovetail was first thrown out there--what do we want to do with this group of people and the talents contained within it? How do we want the Dovetail Collective (both as a publication and as a group) to function?

I believe in the strength of mission statements; maybe it's time to draft one for the Dovetail. And perhaps from there, we can craft some sort of one-line motto. What are your thoughts? What are some things that you, as a member of this collective, would like to see as part of the DC mission statement?

First, with respect to common goals and aspirations, it may be useful to establish what these are at some point.

Regarding the purpose of the collective... here are three things I would like to dovetail to do:

1) act as a forum for creative stimulation and criticism.

2) allow members to share skills and resources (not sure what these may be).

3) provide a medium for the proliferation of creative, artistic, personal, impersonal, and consciousness expanding, unique material.

Each point can apply to both the within-collective community as well as the world at large.

I am interested in what others think about the implications of this collective's potential interaction with the greater community... Is it prefered that the collective exists solely as a tool for personal or within-collective exploration and benefit?

A lofty goal would be to put together a document for publication after some time and lots of discussion.

Like any of this? Think I'm way off the boat? Other ideas?

I think we all have similar goals/wishes/ideas for the Dovetail Collective, it's just a matter of wording them in a way we all agree upon and are comfortable with.

As I've said before, one of my initial objectives for the dovetail collective was, to put it quite simply, is for people to stay in touch with each other--to maintain and develop this creative community.Who's to say where/how this community really started--everyone has come to be a part of the DC via a different road, and in my opinion that's the best way for a community to start--rather organically. I'd like the DC to foster and enhance that community AND those personal relationships.

Another related objective(as I see it) is to experiment with the idea of a "written" community. While there are a few concentration spots of DC members, we come from all over the place, and our community comes together through the creation, and actual, physical document--paper and ink, of the Dovetail Collective(although there are other partial community connections like writing groups, letters, phone calls).

As we create a creative community, I'd also like our personal endeavors to be enhanced. I want us to be motivated and inspired BY the DC and also FOR the DC. I want us to be inspired by each other's work, and also for the DC itself--to have something of our own printed for others to view/read/comment. I'd like to see us experiment with our own writing/art, experiment with genres and aesthetics, the written and visual forms, and push boundaries.

I think it's also important to stress, in our mission statement, that the Dovetail Collective is an ACTUAL newsletter, not an online newsletter. That it appears in paper and ink through the US mail and that we can hold it in our hands and keep it. That to me, is important.

And maybe this is just my own secret wish, but I do picture sometime in the future, some actual gathering of the Dovetail Collective. Of course a lot of this is for social reasons 'cause y'all are the coolest, but I do think about physical, geographically-related community a lot.

Abra suggested that our short title under the Dovetail Collective Banner could be "until then--real ink". I do like this...although I worry about saying "until then" which may imply that we're not doing something worthwhile now, and are just waiting for community to happen.

Anyway. these are just my ramblings. Maybe this is more serious than any of you feel about the DC, but it is really important to me, and just consider this fodder for ideas about our mission. I figure we'll compile all these ideas and draft something up, once we generate enough discussion and feedback.
