Paper Rad

Don't worry, other artist's collective have trouble defining themselves too:

Paper Rad: http://www.paperrad.org/info/info/what-is-paperrad.html

It's an interesting idea, though to think of shows, peices, projects, all as part of the collective.
Check out these two groups too:

Black Ocean, independent literary press and production company. Their 'crew' lives in 3 different cities: Boston, NY and Chicago: http://www.blackocean.org/movement.html

Eye For an Iris, a small press and collective of writers and artists: http://www.eyeforaniris.com/home.html

How do these groups get funding?

We could possibly apply for a grant that would cover publication costs. I've been casually researching grants for a while (looking for that perfect residency) & I recall coming across a few smaller (and possibly easier to get) grants for projects like the DC. Let's see...here's a link to some programs(try clicking through the rest of the search...there's alot of programs here), here's a link to the NEA's page on grants for literary publications (a long shot, but worth a shot?), interesting tax advice for zine publishers, and here's a zine publishing co-op (could save you (us?) some money). I'll keep poking around...there's gotta be some obscure zine publishing grant around the internet somewhere. Also, you might want to check with local arts organizations...they might give you a grant.

Also, I'm sure members of the DC would be willing to rustle up some donations if we're hurtin' for paper & stuff...

Also, if someone from the DC is still be a student @ UM this next year (Abbi?), the DC could qualify for funding from Arts at Michigan. I think my friend Mara got funding for her mag, Red White and Gray, through this program...my friend Alex got some money, too, for some arty thang.

That might be a good starting point. I think the DC could use $500, no?

We aren't necessarily hurting for funding at this point(as long as everyone sends in their stamped envelopes and such). But we'll need to start charging subscriptions at some point(probably late summer) when I don't have access to cheap printing and if we keep expanding membership.

I don't think the members will mind this, but it sure wouldn't hurt to have some extra money to have some color pages once in a while, our own shnazzy website, even print some small-format anthologies. I'm sure we could come up with something to do with the funds!

If we all do some investigation, I bet we can come up with something. Nice hunting, maggie kate!

margaret, you are the best. (i hear you might be back in A2 this summer? let's bake a lot.) i'll let you all know as soon as i decide on grad school; i would definitely help apply to arts at michigan--and to whatever else we think would be good to apply to.
