"prayer" flags
I had an idea just now as I was munching on banana bread in my kitchen (it's early afternoon here). I was thinking about Tibetan prayer flags...I've always liked them. I was thinking it would be cool if we made prayer flags for each other. This is how it would work: everyone interested in being a part of the project can comment here. Then, you're responsible for making one prayer flag for each person who wants to be involved. You send these prayer flags out. The end result would be that we'd each have these strings of beautiful, multicolored flags...sort of keeping us all connected...
Rough guidelines for flag construction: rectangles of cloth roughly a foot long and eight inches wide, decorated as you will (embroidered, appliqued, markered, tiedied, block printed, etc), perhaps focusing on a theme ("peace", "comfort", "awesomeness", "rock music!", "pie", etc), with little loops attached to the top so the flag can be strung up on twine-thickness string. Flags should be lightweight, so they may flutter...
I don't really view the project as religious (I think the project is metaphorical), and I hope it isn't interpreted as disrespectful appropriation of Tibetan culture (please call me out if so)...at any rate, if you're interested (or if you have suggestions), comment!

Yes!!! I love it--count me in! It would be so great to have strings of flags made by friends to hang around my room or porch! Flatbread in Portland, ME has strings of homemade flags like that, and I've always admired them.
I think it would be awesome to make them out of scraps of old fabric--dishrags and old t-shirts,etc... so that they have vivid colors or fun prints.
Margaret--you might want to send an e-mail out about this--I'm not exactly sure how many people read this blog.
Yowza! I am totally in. Margaret, this is a lovely idea and I can't wait to make flags for everyone. Will you compile a list of everyone who wants to be involved so we know who to make them for when the time comes?
Maybe we should all munch on more banana bread in an effort to increase creativity...
Breathtaking. In Minneapolis every one in my community got a community-made quilt when they had a baby. WHo needs babies?! I like the prayer flag idea much more.
Perhaps I should email this to people? Is there a dovetail collective list? Should I just send it to the nelp list(s)? Hmmmm...
you can email it to the dovetail collective list that I sent the reminder emails to-- theDovetailCollective@googlegroups.com
Who needs babies, indeed.
Hanna Clark would like to do it too, I think. An email would be a good idea. I also wrote Sara and Michael about it in a letter, since they boycott modern technology--I'm not sure if they'd like to do it or not.
xoxo
