Audio Edition!
My Dear Comrades,
For the next issue of the Dovetail, the Summer Issue--Issue 5, I am
collaborating with Emily to do something a little bit different than
the other issues so far. We are going to put together an audio issue
that will be compiled in the form of CDs (for the audio) and
accompanying CD booklets and packaging (for all the visual and written
components).
This format is going to require some specific kinds of participation
from the group.
There are a lot of different ways to participate in the audio
component. First of all, if you play an instrument, are in a band,
fancy yourself a yodeler, or what to sing the lullabies of your
childhood you can send me all of that kind of stuff on a CD in the mail
or tell me where I can get it online. Feel free to send them as mp3s,
AIFFs, or just regular audio tracks off of iTunes or whatever you use.
Don't feel like you need to have had a lot of experience crooning
ballads in public to send music or that you need a lot of
fancy-schmancy recording equipment to do it. Most computers have an
internal mic, and although it might not be the best, it gets the job
done. Let me know if you need help with this aspect of it, and I can
hook you up to whatever resources I can think of.
Wait, you say, I can't carry a tune! I can't even beat two sticks
together in time with the Fourth of July Parade! In fact, I got into
this whole writing racket to avoid the grotesque display of
masturbatory celebrity that is people playing music in public!
Not to worry, there are lots of other ways to contribute audio! I have
set up an answering service where you have three minutes to say pretty
much whatever you want. You can read a poem or tell a story or a joke
or read an essay you have written. If you need more than three minutes,
just keep calling and I will edit it into one solid entity (email me if
this is your plan). For those of you familiar with Frieze Frame it is
the same number and the same idea. The phone number is 734 661 0323. If
you are confused about this just write me an email and I will be happy
to answer your questions.
Also, if you are interested in recording or producing other kinds of
audio that is, of course, accepted as well. The overarching theme for
this project should be variety and creativity, so feel free to include
anything. Noises heard around your city or house, sound effects, a
conversation, radio documentary, audio journalism, etc. are all fully
welcome for this project. Think dictaphones and tape recorders with a
record button. Again, if you have an idea but can't think of how to
turn it into an actual solid piece of audio, let me know and I can
either help you or point you in the direction of someone who can.
For another recording option, Karl has offered to let anyone near
Brooklyn, New York come to his apartment and record anything they want
on his 8-track. He also said "I have most instruments at my disposal
too. Anyone that travels to record can be provided with my first class
overnight accommodations --that is, an air mattress and clean sheets on
my dining room floor." If that sounds like a plan, email him at
ksturk@umich.edu.
Finally, if you are not interested in the audio component at all, or
you just want to write something or send pictures or art, we are also
going to be including a written component to this issue of the
Dovetail. Feel free to treat this as either a supplement to your audio
or a completely different thing. That is, you can send the lyrics to
your song or just send a poem that has no audio component at all. These
written/pictorial submissions should be able to fit in a standard CD
booklet. Emily and I and other members will then compile the CD into a
complete package-with cover design, booklet and CD-with a certain
aesthetic-perhaps that of an old-time variety show?(Let us know if
you have ideas!)
Oh wait, one other thing. I'll need a little bit of cash-ola to make
this thing a reality-to cover the cost of CDs, postage, and
materials. If you would like a copy of this issue, please send $3 to
me. I will buy the CDs in bulk, but if we all chip in three dollars
that should cover the CD, printing, and postage.
Whew! I think that explains it all. It would be awesome if people could
get me all this stuff by July 20 so I can start getting it all together
and then we can send it out in August.
Emily and I have discussed having some kind of issue release party,
probably in Ann Arbor, where there could be some performances of the
pieces included on the audio issue. We also thought about selling
copies of this one to raise some money to keep this project going.
Let us know what you think.
Again, if you have any questions....
