Issue 3 on its way to you!

Hey Kids!

Issue 3 is on its way to a mailbox near you! They are going out today and tomorrow.
I had a lot of fun putting together this last issue--let me know whatcha think.

The deadline for next issue is Sunday, April 30th.

We had planned for the next issue to be the 'In And Out My Window'(or whatever you want to call it) Issue, where everyone submits a picture looking outside their bedroom or apartment window. With the diversity of locations within the collective, this could be verrrry neat. We can include accompanying writing peices too...interpret as you will. The idea from this came from this project: http://lappareil.free.fr/window/map.html

I don't think Issue 4 should be limited to this theme, though, so if you want to submit something else, go for it!

As always, PLEASE SEND SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPES if you haven't yet. It makes it so much easier and faster!

What is a Zine?

From "Introduction to The Zine Yearbook" by Stephen Duncombe.

"Zines...are non commercial, nonprofessional, small circulation magazines that their creators produce, publish and distribute by themselves. I add that zines are usually reproduced on standard paper on regular old copy machines, assembled by hand, and swapped for other zines or sold at minimal cost."

"Zines are not normal.By this I mean that zines are a gateway into an alternative world. They twist and turn through the idosyncratic and sometimes bizarre interests of their publishers, opening up vistas into unexplored territory for the curious. Zines also shine a light into a shadow America (or Britain or Mexico or wherever), a world of subcultural scenes, where groups of individuals come together to forge novel systems of values, different artistic tastes and practices, or dissident political views...and then write about these self-generated alternative worlds. And as zine writers communicate to one another, swapping zines and thereby sharing their ideas and lives, they create a new community linked by words, paper, and the postal service; a virtual bohemia."

"prayer" flags

I had an idea just now as I was munching on banana bread in my kitchen (it's early afternoon here). I was thinking about Tibetan prayer flags...I've always liked them. I was thinking it would be cool if we made prayer flags for each other. This is how it would work: everyone interested in being a part of the project can comment here. Then, you're responsible for making one prayer flag for each person who wants to be involved. You send these prayer flags out. The end result would be that we'd each have these strings of beautiful, multicolored flags...sort of keeping us all connected...

Rough guidelines for flag construction: rectangles of cloth roughly a foot long and eight inches wide, decorated as you will (embroidered, appliqued, markered, tiedied, block printed, etc), perhaps focusing on a theme ("peace", "comfort", "awesomeness", "rock music!", "pie", etc), with little loops attached to the top so the flag can be strung up on twine-thickness string. Flags should be lightweight, so they may flutter...

I don't really view the project as religious (I think the project is metaphorical), and I hope it isn't interpreted as disrespectful appropriation of Tibetan culture (please call me out if so)...at any rate, if you're interested (or if you have suggestions), comment!
